In a statement released today, the College of Community Physicians of Sri Lanka pledged solidarity to the LGBTQI community of Sri Lanka as the country awaits the historical judgement on repealing sections 365 and 365 A of the penal code.

The apex professional body for public health in Sri Lanka noted that decriminalization of non-heteronormative gender identities will lead to better equality and equity of health care access to the Sri Lankan health care system.

The College has championed upholding the rights of sexual and reproductive rights of all citizens , including those of the LGBTQI community providing services, technical expertise, public awareness creation and initiating policy dialogue.

In 2018, the College of Community Physicians of Sri Lanka published “Montage of Sexuality in Sri Lanka” with the United Nations Population Fund highlighting the lives of citizens from a perspective of their sexuality, gender and health ,advocating for the decriminalization of non heteronormative gender identities.
